Johor Bahru: India's Valiyaveetil Diju and Jwala Gutta scored a sensational 21-19, 21-11 win over Poland's Robert Mateusiak and Nadiezda Kostiuczyk to storm into the mixed doubles final of the World Super Series Masters Finals badminton at the Johor Bahru City Stadium on Saturday.V Diju (L) and mixed doubles partner Jwala Gutta

However, top-seeded Indian Saina Nehwal went down 18-21, 18-21 to Juliane Schenk of Germany in the women's singles semifinals.

It was a strong comeback from world No 7 Jwala and Diju who had lost their opening Group match.

The Indians will take on World No. 4 and top seeds Joachim Fischer Nielsen-Christina Pedersen of Denmark in the final Sunday. The Danish combination went past England's Anthony Clark and Donna Kellogg 21-13, 21-17.

Taufik Hidayat to reach the semi-finals at the World Super Series Masters Finals on Thursday.

The 27-year-old world number one from Malaysia completes his group fixtures with a match against China's
Boa Chunlai, who also advanced with a 17-21, 21-18, 21-16 win over Taiwan's Hsieh Yu Hsin.

Lee was at his best and said: "I just wanted to win and book my place in the semis. A defeat would have meant I had to wait for my final group match to decide my fate.

Thursday was a day to forget for Hendra Aprida Gunawan.

The former national player was in action in two events — men’s doubles and mixed doubles — and came away empty-handed both times during the second day of the Super Series Masters Finals in Johor Baru, Malaysia.

First, Hendra teamed up with men’s doubles partner Alvent Yulianto Chandra in a 21-19, 21-19 loss to South Korean pair Jung Jae Sung and Lee Young Dae at Bandaraya Indoor Stadium.

 

Saina is Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year

New Delhi, Dec 3  India's badminton sensation Saina Nehwal was today declared the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year for her stupendous show in 2009.

The Hyderabadi shuttler became the first Indian to have won a Super Series title when she triumphed in Indonesian event in June. She also broke into the top-10 zone this year.

India cricketer Virat Kohli was adjudged the Young Player of the Year while India's Davis Cup Squad was named as the Team of the Year.

Jamaican super sprinter Usain Bolt, a Beijing Olympic gold medallist, was chosen as the International Sportsperson of the Year while the Lifetime Achievement award will be given posthumously to former BCCI president Raj Singh Dungarpur.

"These individuals have shown supreme grit and determination in their endeavours to excel.
