When Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir won the All England mixed doubles title on Sunday, they didn’t just end a nine-year drought. They also renewed the country’s hope of continuing its Olympic gold medal tradition.

Indonesia has won at least one gold medal in each of the Games since badminton became a full Olympic sport in 1992. But the struggles of Indonesia’s shuttlers these past three years put that streak in doubt at this year’s Olympics in London. Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir celebrate following their victory over Thomas Laybourn and Kamilla Rytter Juhl during the mixed doubles final of the All England Open Championships at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham on Sunday.

Last year, of the 60 available titles at badminton’s top-tier tournaments, the Super Series, Indonesia won just two. Both came from Tontowi and Liliyana.

Chinese pin-up Lin Dan won his fifth All England men's singles title on Sunday against Lee Chong Wei, but only after his chief rival from Malaysia was forced to retire with a shoulder injury in Birmingham.

There was to be no record, no congratulatory phone call from the Malaysian prime minister. Chinese pin-up Lin Dan won his fifth All England men's singles title on Sunday against Lee Chong Wei, but only after his chief rival from Malaysia was forced to retire with a shoulder injury in Birmingham.

Lin had said before the final that he didn't care who won the showdown everyone was hoping for. But the world and Olympic champion clearly showed compassion when the world No 1 offered his hand when 21-19 and 6-2 down in the second game.Shuttle run: All England Open Champion Lin Dan of China (left) with Lee Chon Wei of Malaysia

Before Chong Wei's injury - he played with his right shoulder heavily strapped - the Malaysian Datuk was perhaps slight favourite for a third successive All England title, a feat no men's singles player had achieved since Rudy Hartono, the Indonesian master of 38 years ago.

At least there were glimpses during their brief 31-minute foray as to why these two are considered the best in their discipline by some considerable distance.

Both defend with remarkable agility - which the packed Birmingham crowd had earlier witnessed to superb effect in a men's doubles thriller - while their speed and net play made sure of a 28th meeting. Lin has now prevailed in 19 of those encounters.

Despite their obvious ferocity on court, a unique bond exists between these two players off it, summed up when the two swapped shirts "on the spur of the moment" over the net, to the delight of the 8,000 inside the National Indoor Arena.

The Danish maestro Peter Hoeg Gade paid homage to his contemporary Chinese shuttler Lin Dan by calling him the greatest of his times.

The 35-year-old Danish living legend Peter Gade is going to grace the Olympics for the last time as he is expected to call it a day after spending 17 years in badminton arena, which itself a record that nobody is likely going to break.

The former All England champion Peter Gade is determined to end on high despite of the fact that he will have to excel the top players like Lin Dan, Lee Chong Wei, Chen Jin, Chen Long and Lee Hyun-Il in his last All England Open.

But out of all these heavy weights, Peter Gade is impressed by the Chinese ace Lin Dan only and calls him the greatest and incomparable.

Gade said, “But there is no doubt that Lin Dan is the best of them. I don't think that anyone is close to him, to be honest. “

BIRMINGHAM, England: Peter Gade, the former world number one from Denmark, will complete a record which is never likely to be broken when he plays his last All-England Open starting at Britain's national indoor arena on Wednesday.

After competing at the highest level for 17 years and winning the All-England more than a decade ago, the fourth-seeded Gade remains a leading contender - a remarkable achievement given the increasing speed of the modern game.

When the 35-year-old retires soon after the Olympic Games at London in August, he will have been by far the longest lasting top level men's singles player the professional game has ever seen.

The slim, light-footed mover from Copenhagen would love to end on a high, but he is in the same quarter as Lee Chong Wei, the top-seeded defending All-England champion from Malaysia.

As a top badminton player it is understandable that Chris Adcock wanted to do whatever it took to get to the Olympics.

Unfortunately for his girlfriend, however, that meant ditching her as his doubles partner – in favour of her blonde rival.
