Malaysia plays down Commonwealth Games expectations

National Sports Council (NSC) of Malaysia only expects Malaysia to win two gold medals in badminton events at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

However, Rashid Sidek, the national singles coach holds a different opinion that he thinks Malaysia shuttlers could win more.Tee Jing Yi's success in winning all her three matches in Uber Cup last month, especially in straight sets, augers well for the country and the player herself.

“I think we can win more than two gold medals, we are hoping to win at least four golds like we did over each of the past two Commonwealth games.”

Kuala Lumpur: The 14-year-old Goh Jin Wei of Penang shocked the Badminton community in Malaysia on Tuesday with a 20-22, 22-20, 21-15 upset against Malaysia’s second women's singles player Yang Li Lian of Selangor in a nail biting Sukma women’s singles final.Goh Jin Wei with her family (left) and Zulfadli Zulkiffli (right)

When asked about another teen sensation Ratchanok Intanon from Thailand after the match, Jin Wei refused to be compared to Ratchanok who won her first world junior title at the age of 14 and won the world championship last year when she was 18.

Lai Pei Jing will play in Commonwealth Games

Kuala Lumpur: BAM has decided to pair up Chan Peng Soon and Lai Pei Jing in the mixed doubles event for the XX Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, over 11 days of competition from 23 July to 3 August 2014.Chan Peng Soon and Lai Pei Jing are the reigning Malaysia champions

The decision was made due to Chan Peng Soon's longtime partner, Goh Liu Ying has decided to undergo a career saving knee surgery on May 20th this year. Liu Ying, who forms the World No 11 pair with Peng Soon, will take at least six months to return to training but the recovery could take longer if there are other complications.
