KUALA LUMPUR: Shuttler Lee Wan Wah passed a medical test yesterday and he will get himself ready to participate in the men's doubles event of the Beijing Olympics in August.

However, Choong Tan Fook had mixed reactions over news that his partner had been given a clean bill of health from a shoulder injury picked up at the Thomas Cup Finals in Jakarta two weeks ago.

He is disappointed that for all the hard work that they had put in over the last one-year to qualify for their third Olympics, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) are contemplating dropping them.

Doubts over the fitness of Wan Wah had prompted the BAM coaching and training committee to postpone the naming of the men's pairs for the Olympics.

If I asked you to name me three of the six British badminton players going to the Beijing Olympics, I reckon you would get stuck at two.

KUALA LUMPUR: It would have been a foregone conclusion two months ago but the shoulder injury sustained by Lee Wan Wah during the Thomas Cup Finals in Jakarta last week could now pave the way for Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Latif to earn an unexpected debut appearance in the Beijing Olympics.

While the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) would have no qualms choosing the two doubles pairs for the Olympics based on world ranking positions and experience, the injury to Wan Wah has put them in a spot.

AKARTA: Malaysia used to look at winning their first-ever gold medal in the Olympics from men's doubles badminton in Beijing in August as a high possibility.

But now, the abilities of youngsters Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and veterans Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah to even get into the playoffs for medals are highly in doubt.

Image
Best bet: Chong Wei’s good show at the Thomas Cup has certainly slashed the odds against him being among the medal contender in Beijing.

Doubtful: Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong’s inconsistent form will make it difficult for them to even get into the playoffs for medals in the Olympics.
