Finally, Pengyu lands the big one with ABC title (pic)

TAIPEI: World No. 3 Du Pengyu of China finally won his first-ever career title after he stunned compatriot Chen Long in the men’s singles final of the Asian Badminton Championships yesterday.

Pengyu, the second seed, required only 40 minutes to beat All-England champion and top seed Chen Long 21-17, 21-19.Du Pengyu

“I’m happy to win my first-ever title, but I still need to work hard and keep on improving,” said the 25-year-old Pengyu, who previously lost all his seven finals.

China were also victorious in the women’s singles through Wang Yihan, who downed Li Xuerui 21-15, 21-13 in an all-Chinese final.

Former world champ Chen Jin retires (pic)

BEIJING: Former world badminton men’s singles champion Chen Jin has called it a day after a decade-long career.

The 27-year-old is now an assistant women’s singles coach of the Chinese national team.

It is learnt that he handed in his letter notifying the team of his retirement at the end of last month.Chen Jin

The team approved it and roped him in to help out the women’s singles coaching department, which has been short-staffed since Zhang Ning went on maternity leave.

Proud dad Chong Wei returns to action in Axiata Cup final (pic)

KUALA LUMPUR: World No 1 Datuk Lee Chong Wei, who just became a father on Friday, will play in the US1 mil (RM3.04mil) Axiata Cup after all.

After some coaxing from his teammates, Chong Wei has decided to come to the team's rescue by playing in the final tie against Thailand at 7.30pm, Sunday at Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium in Cheras.Chong Wei and Mew Choo with Kingston.

With Chong Wei playing, the team's chances are certainly better against the Thais and the home team now stand a better chance of winning the mixed team Cup for the first time and also pocket a whopping US400,000 (RM1.217mil) top prize money. The runners-up get to take home US200,000 (RM608,000).

Men’s Singles crown of Yonex All England Open Badminton Championships belonged to Chen Long as he overpowered Lee Chong Wei in the title match on Sunday, March 10, 2013.

This final match was played at the local badminton complex of Birmingham and it remained in full swing for one hour and two minutes.

Both world class shuttlers employed their brilliance in the game and kept the audience glued to their chairs while piling up final figures of 21-17 and 21-18.

On the other hand, the badminton king Chong Wei looked completely off colour as he put a fluctuated performance and squandered the opportunity of a hat-trick title.
