An unusual day for the world badminton championships as Malaysia's golden hopeful Lee Chong Wei and world number two women's singles player Xie Xingfang were both shown the exit on Thursday.

Second seed Lee Chong Wei lost to Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia 21-11, 21-9.

VETERAN Mohd Roslin Hashim survived a scare to reach the second round of the men’s singles event in the World Championships but Malaysia’s focus was not on him at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Former World No. 1 Peter Gade of Denmark cleared the first hurdle in his bid to win the elusive World Badminton Championship title, beating England's Andrew Smith 21-18, 21-10 on Tuesday.

It took the 31-year old Dane only 36 minutes to put Smith out of the competition and earn a second round match against Hong Kong's Chan Yan Kit.
