Sydney: Last week’s Indonesia Open men’s singles champion Kidambi Srikanth together with PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal of India have enjoyed a strong run of form at the Australian Open Super Series Badminton Tournament held at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre in Australia, when all three of them have advanced to the quarter-finals on Thursday.
Kidambi Srikanth who shocked the World No. 1 Son Wan Ho of Korea 21-15, 14-21, 24-22 in the semifinals of the Indonesia Super Series Premier last week, defeated Son for the second time in two weeks as the Indian saw off the World No. 1 South Korean 15-21, 21-13, 21-13 to cruise into the quarterfinals.
Srikanth will take on compatriot B Sai Praneeth in the last eight.
The Rio Olympic women’s singles silver medalist P.V Sindhu also shown a fantastic display to beat 19-year-old Chinese player Chen Xiaoxin 21-13, 21-18 on Thursday. However, Sindhu faces a tough task in the last eight as she will meet No. 1 seed Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan.
Meanwhile, Saina Nehwal didn’t have things all her own way as she had to dig deep to get past spirited Malaysian shuttler Soniia Cheah 21-15, 20-22, 21-14 to reach the quarter-finals.
Nehwal will meet No. 6 seed Sun Yu of China next.
In men’s singles, Chen Long will battle Lin Dan for a semi-final spot on Friday.
