Odense: Two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan has withdrawn from the Denmark Open that will kick off on Wednesday at the Odense Sports Park.
In addition to Lin Dan, two other men’s singles players from India – Ajay Jayaram and Sameer Verma also pulled out from the tournament.
These withdrawals would boost Viktor Axelsen’s chances of winning the tournament, since all three players above were drawn into the same half with Axelsen.
However, the top half of the draw is relatively intact. Former world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei will open the tournament against Pablo Abian of Spain in the first round, and could possibly play H.S. Prannoy of India in the second round. If the seeds hold up, Lee will play Son Wan-Ho in the quarter-finals and Chen Long in the semi-finals.
In women’s singles, China’s World No. 6 Sun Yu has also pulled out from the tournament. With her absence, China was left with No. 7 seed He Bingjiao and Chen Yufei in the women’s singles event. Chen Yufei will play her opener against No. 2 seed P.V. Sindhu of India.
