Kuala Lumpur: The Rio Olympic silver medalists Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong produced a majestic display to show why they are favorites to win the Malaysia Masters after holding off a thrilling fight-back from No. 7 seeds Vladimir Ivanov/Ivan Sozonov of Russia 22-20, 22-20 to reach the second round.
Goh/Tan won in 36 minutes and will face compatriots Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi next.
Teo Ee Yi/Ong Yew Sin also scored a decisive victory by beating the Malaysian/Korean combo of Lim Khim Wah and Yoo Yeon Seong 21-15, 21-18.
In women’s singles, Malaysia’s Lee Ying Ying survived a first-round scare from Evgeniya Kosetskaya before grinding out a 21-17, 23-21 victory over the Russian in front of a raucous home crowd on Wednesday. Lee is scheduled to play Aya Ohori of Japan in the second round.
The former World Junior Champion Goh Jin Wei also cruised into the second round after outlasting Hanna Ramadini from Indonesia 21-15, 21-19 to play Pai Yu Po of Taiwan on Thursday.
Nevertheless, Lim Yin Fun and Soniia Cheah both fought hard, but went down to Akane Yamaguchi and Tai Tzu Ying respectively in their women’s singles first round matches.
In women’s doubles, Soong Fie Cho/Tee Yi Jing, Lim Yin Loo/Yap Cheng Wen, Chow Mei Kuan/Lee Meng Yean and Vivian Hoo/Woon Khe Wei were able to cruise into the second round.
