New Delhi: Women’s singles World No. 3 PV Sindhu suffered a right ankle injury on Tuesday while preparing for the Commonwealth Games that will be held in Gold Coast, Australia next month.

The Olympic and world championship silver medalist hurt her ankle while training at the Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad and her father told reporters that they have done an MRI on the injury just to make sure everything was fine.

“I am happy that no bone or ligament injury was found from the MRI result,” said her father PV Ramana.

“She will take a one-day break and will do some strengthening training again one day after tomorrow. There’s enough time for her to recover, as the Commonwealth Games starts with the team event first,” added her father.

Besides the injury scare, PV Sindhu’s rising stature as a famous sportswoman in India has allowed her to be named the flag-bearer of the Indian contingent for the opening ceremony that will be held on April 4th.

Sindhu is one of the favorites to win the badminton women’s singles title in Gold Coast. In the last Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014, she lost to Michelle Li of Canada 20-22, 20-22 in the semi-finals, and defeated Tee Jing Yi of Malaysia 23-21, 21-9 to win the bronze medal match.

Speaking to Indian media, Sindhu said even if many top shuttlers will not be in Gold Coast, but the competition would not be any easier.

“It’s not easy, good players such as Michelle Li (Gold medalist in Glasgow Commonwealth Games), Kirsty Gilmour (silver medalist in Glasgow Commonwealth Games), Saina Nehwal and several good young players from Malaysia. We can never underestimate these players,” said Sindhu.
