SINGAPORE – OLYMPIC gold medal pair Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia have been beaten by an unheralded British duo in a shock result at the men’s doubles final of the $200,000 Aviva Open in Singapore.
Anthony Clark and Nathan Robertson, ranked 19th in the world, dispatched with the No. 1 ranked Indonesians in a dominant 21-12, 21-11 victory at the fifth Super Series event of the year.
‘They’re the best in the world on their day and to win 12 and 11 is quite incredible,’ Robertson said.
The Super Series continues next week in Jakarta.
Bao Chunlai of China won the men’s singles final in a hard-fought match against Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana, 21-19, 16-21, 21-15.
Earlier in the tournament, world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei lost to Vietnamese shuttler Nguyen Tien Minh.
In the women’s singles final, Hong Kong’s Zhou Mi, ranked No. 2 in the world, defeated former world number one Xie Xingfang of China in a tough battle, 21-19, 18-21, 21-10.
In the women’s doubles final, China’s Zhao Tingting and Zhang Yawen defeated Indonesia’s Nitya Krishinda Maheswari and Greysia Polii, 21-14, 21-13.
In the mixed doubles, Zheng Bo and Ma Jin beat their Chinese counterparts Zhang and Xie Zhongbo, 19-21, 21-19, 21-11.
