Jakarta: Shuttlers for the Indonesia Thomas Cup squad are in high spirits ahead of the Thomas Cup Finals that will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 20–27 May.

Expectations are now high for the Indonesia men’s team especially after they have strengthened their men’s singles department.

“After our defeat in the Thomas cup final two years ago due to the weak men’s singles, we’ve beef up the department, and two of our men’s singles players are now well prepared for this year’s tournament,” said Ahcmad Budiharto, secretary general of the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI).

Meanwhile, PBSI’s high performance director Susi Susanti was also confident that they could take home the Thomas Cup trophy due to the latest progress in men’s singles.

Susanti explained that the reason why PBSI did not pick more experienced players such as Tommy Sugiarto and Sony Dwi Kuncoro for the Thomas Cup men’s singles event, was due to those players did not belong to Indonesia’s national team or PBSI.

“Sony and Tommy were nominated for the men’s singles department, but after our meeting, we’ve decided to include only player in PBSI, which is Firman, especially from the age perspective, Firman is a much younger player,” said Susanti.

“It’s easier to monitor the condition of players who train with the national team, therefore, we’ve decided to choose Ihsan and Firman,” added Susanti.

As for the Indonesian women’s team, Susanti said PBSI hoped the team could get pass the group stage and make it to the knockout stage or even semifinal.

Denmark is the defending Thomas Cup champion while China is facing huge challenge from Japan in this year’s Uber Cup competition.
