MANILA - Siblings Kennevic and Kennie Asuncion of the Philippines continued their bid for the Mixed Doubles crown at the Bingo Bonanza Philippine Open Gold Grand Prix Badminton Championships 2009 Wednesday in Pasig City.
The Asuncions blasted fellow Filipinos Joffre Arollado and Irene Chiu, 21-10, 21-7, to set up a round of 16 match against Chinese pair Qiu Zihan and Deng Yuting on Thursday at the PhilSports Arena (formerly ULTRA).
Filipino pair Malvinne Ann Venice Alcantara and Ronel Estanislao also made it to the round of 16, reported PhilOpenBadminton.com. They prevailed over Japan’s Katsuhito Sakurai and Yuka Hayashi, 21-17, 21-19.
Gelita Castillo and Gregg Paz, however, lost in their opening match as they were beaten by Susanto Njoto and Ng Ka Shun of Hong Kong, 12-21, 11-21.
In the Men’s Singles, China’s Chen Long defeated Rodel Bartolome of the Philippines, 21-10, 21-5. He faces Indonesian Yogendran Krishnan in the round of 16.
Hong Kong’s Wong Wing Ki got the better of Malaysian Pei Wee Chung, 21-14, 21-10. He is set to play against another Malaysian, Lee Tsuen Seng on Thursday.
Chinese Du Pengyu of China, meantime, will face Malaysia’s Sairul Amar Ayob in the third round. Du beat the only non-Asian entry in the men’s singles, Iztok Utrosa of Slovenia, 21-8, 21-10.
Other badminton players who posted wins in the tournament’s opening day are Lu Qicheng, Zhou Wenlong and Adnan Fauzi.
Women shuttlers who succeeded in their first day matches include Sachiyo Imai, Mong Kwan Yi, Rie Eto, Jiang Yanjiao, Nguyen Le Ngoc and Chan Hung Ling.
Hong Kong’s Zhou Mi won over Yu Wakita of Japan, 21-16, 21-15, to reach the second round. She will face Indonesian Aprillia Yuswandari.
Yip Pui Yin, also of Hong Kong, defeated Chiu, 21-11, 21-9. She is set to play compatriot Chan Tsz Ka in the second round.
