Kuala Lumpur: The 2018 Chinese Taipei Open champion Lee Zii Jia withdrew Saturday from the Macau Open because of a back injury.

Malaysia’s men’s singles head coach Misbun Sidek said the withdrawal was a precaution against overworking Lee’s physical condition and to give the 20-year-old enough time to recover.

Lee was originally scheduled to kick off his opener against Hong Kong’s No. 2 seed Vincent Wong Wing Ki in the first round next Tuesday.

Even though he had withdrawn from the Macau Open, Lee remained optimistic about the 2018 Korea Masters that will be held in Gwangju, South Korea, from November 27 to December 2.

“I am still recovering from my back injury. I was injured in the training about a month ago. I’m going to rest to ensure I am in top shape for Korean Masters,” said Lee.

“At the Chinese Taipei Open, I played with the injury throughout the tournament. I felt the pain before and after the game, but I still tried to give my best in each game,” added Lee.
