PETALING JAYA: Malaysia need not despair. Ng Hui Ern and Lai Pei Jing have breathed new life into the girls’ doubles department following their promising display in the Asian Junior Championships at Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara.

The pair, forged just days before the tournament began, fell to China’s Xia Huan-Tang Jinhua 25-23, 15-21, 15-21 in the semi-finals on Saturday.

But they did enough to make Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) doubles coach Yap Kim Hock purring with delight, saying he saw a good understanding between the two and that he might even consider keeping them as a pair permanently.

“They played very well, showing good fighting spirit even though they were paired up just before the tournament began,” he said, adding that the girls’ achievement was something to be proud of since Malaysia did not even make it to the quarter-finals last year.

“I may keep them as a pair and split up the partnership of Hui Ern-Ong Boon Hui because Hui Ern is performing a lot better with Pei Jing.”

Kim Hock also said Hui Ern-Pei Jing showed heaps of improvements in their game.

“But they need to improve more on their technique in order to have a better control of their game,” he noted.
