Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s No. 1 seed Soong Joo Ven saw off compatriot Lim Chong King 21-13, 21-15 on Saturday to advance to the Malaysia International Series final.
Soong will play his teammate No. 2 seed Cheam June Wei in the men’s singles title match.
Cheam, on the other hand, needed only 40 minutes to outlast another Malaysian player Tan Jia Wei 21-16, 21-10 in the last four.
In a nail-biter women’s singles semi-final, the two-time champion Selvaduray Kisona fought hard but could convert when she was leading at 20-19, 22-21 in the decider, where she eventually went down to Sri Fatmawati of Indonesia 11-21, 21-15, 23-25 in 62 minutes.
However, another Malaysian women’s singles player, Eoon Qi Xuan was able to withstand the pressure, beating Thailand’s Aimsaard Nuntakarn 21-6, 21-18 to enter the final.
Malaysia’s men’s doubles pair Low Hang Yee/Ng Eng Cheong shook off their nerves, fighting tooth-and-nail and kept pursuing the victory in a dramatic encounter which lasted one hour nine minutes, before booking a ticket to the final by knocking off Indonesia’s Muhammad Shohibul Fikri/Bagas Maulana 21-14, 18-21, 30-29. The No. 4 seeds Low/Ng will play No. 3 seeds Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin of Indonesia for the men’s doubles crown.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s Pearly Tan/Muralitharan Thinaah escaped the challenge from Nita Violina Marwah/Putri Syaikah of Indonesia with a 23-21, 21-18 victory, and will face No. 1 seeds Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma/Ribka Sugiarto of Indonesia on Sunday.
