Olympics-Malaysia investing in four sports for elusive gold

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 - Malaysia is earmarking around $5 million to train 19 athletes led by badminton world number one Lee Chong Wei to deliver the nation's first Olympic gold medal at the 2012 London Games.

Badminton, archery, cycling and diving have been shortlisted for the "Road to London" scheme, with the government setting aside 16 million ringgit ($4.6 million) for comprehensive training.

"They will be depended upon to deliver Malaysia's elusive gold medal in London," the New Straits Times quoted Malaysian cabinet committee for sports chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as saying on Wednesday.

"However, 19 is not a fixed number as we may add more athletes and sports under the programme," he said.
