Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia will fancy his chances at his World Championship debut in Basel, Switzerland from August 19 to 25, after being handed a relatively comfortable route in the draw, but could face a stumbling block in the second or third round.
The World No. 17 men’s singles player will face Brazil’s Ygor Coelho in the first round and he is expected to meet China’s World No. 21 Lu Guangzu in the second round.
“The draw was not so bad for me as I will play the Brazilian (Coelho) in the first round and if I could step into the second round I would meet the Chinese player (Lu Guangzu),” said Lee.
“Then in the third round I will probably face Kenta Nishimoto of Japan. I’ve defeated him before,” Lee told the media at a press conference after the release of the full World Championship draw on Monday.
However, Lee Zii Jia did not see the absence of some big names including Viktor Axelsen (Denmark) and Shi Yuqi (China) due to injury could give him an advantage over other men’s singles players.
“For men’s singles, all players are equally difficult for me. I’m hoping for good performance in Basel. Right now, I am strengthening my physical fitness because it’s going to be important during the tournament,” added Lee.
