Kuala Lumpur: Despite being eliminated by Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi of Malaysia in the first round of Thailand Open last Tuesday, Indonesia’s 2013, 2015 men’s doubles World Champions, Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan have moved up to No.2 in the latest badminton world rankings, released on Tuesday by the BWF.
They have successfully surpassed Li Junhui/Liu Yuchen from China and Japanese pair Takeshi Kamura/Keigo Sonoda to become the new World No. 2 men’s pair after winning 2 titles and 4 runners-up this season.
Meanwhile, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo remained as World No. 1 even after defeat in the Thailand Open quarter-final last Friday while Malaysian rising pair Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik climbed up two positions to 9th.
Both Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan & Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo have also created history in BWF rankings that for the first time, the top two men’s doubles world rankings were successfully occupied by pairs from Indonesia.
In men’s singles, Chou Tien Chen of Taiwan who lifted Thailand Open last Sunday in an epic coming from behind battle against Angus Ng Ka Long of Hong Kong, became the highest ranked Taiwanese men’s singles player in BWF history as he soared to World No. 2.
Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia rose three places to No. 14 and Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie finally broke into top five at World No. 4.
Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi continued to lead the women’s singles rankings followed by Tai Tzu Ying, Chen Yufei, Nozomi Okuhara, and PV Sindhu in the top five.
