Kazan: Last Saturday, top seeds Indonesia brought back their first ever BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championship, also known as the Suhandinata Cup by beating China 3-1 in the final.
It was a spectacular achievement for the Indonesian team as this was the country’s first international title in a team event since winning the Thomas Cup in 2002.
In the World Junior Mixed Team final, the Indonesian team raced to a quick 2-0 lead as Daniel Marthin/Indah Cahya Sari Jamil defeated Feng Yan Zhe/Lin Fang Ling 21-18, 18-21, 21-11 in the mixed doubles match before Putri Kusuma Wardani overcame Zhou Meng 21-18, 20-22, 21-14 in the girls’ singles match.
However, Liu Liang managed to keep the hopes alive for China as he beat Bobby Setiabudi in the boys’ singles with 21-17, 17-21, 22-20.
Nevertheless, girls’ doubles pair Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma/Putri Syaikah produced a brilliant performance in the fourth match, outlasting Li Yi Jing/Tan Ning of China 16-21, 25-23, 21-13 in 88 minutes to help Indonesia lifted the prestigious Suhandinata Cup.
“I am very happy, because this is the first time we won the championship, so I am really proud of my team. Winning the mixed team title shows that Indonesia has a group of young players with great potential. This is an incentive for our new generation of players. When they enter the higher level, they should have the confidence to continue to perform well,” said Susi Susanti, PBSI’s Head of Development and High Performance and the 1992 Barcelona Olympic champion.
Susanti also said that they have been preparing for this competition for nearly a year.
