Bangkok: Malaysia’s World No. 20 men’s pair Teo Ee Yi/Ong Yew Sin celebrated the Chinese New Year eve with two good news, as they were listed by The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to the Asian Team Championship that will take place in Manila, Philippines next month, after they advanced to the Thailand Masters semi-final on Friday.
Teo/Ong needed only 38 minutes to beat seventh-seeded Japanese pair Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi 21-15, 21-17 in the quarter-finals. They will face Taiwan’s Lee Jhe-huei/Yang Po-Hsuan next.
Teo was excited about being listed to play for Malaysia at the Asian Team Championship, and he also viewed this as a special gift before Chinese New Year because they couldn’t celebrate with their family this year.
“Our listing in the national squad was an exciting news. It’s really meaningful to us. We will definitely give our best to BAM and the country. We will not waste this opportunity,” said Teo.
“It is a proud moment for us especially since we are no longer with BAM,” added Teo.
Earlier, BAM also announced that the performance in Manila will also be viewed as a benchmark for selecting players to compete at the Thomas and Uber Cup team championships.
In the Asian Team Championship, Lee Zii Jia will spearhead the men’s singles event alongside Cheam June Wei, Leong Jun Hao and Ng Tze Yong.
Meanwhile in the men’s doubles event, Teo Ee Yi/Ong Yew Sin will be playing with Malaysia’s No. 1 men’s pair Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani/Goh Sze Fei.
Four women singles players including Goh Jin Wei, Soniia Cheah, S Kisona and Eoon Xi Quan have been selected for the women’s team, while Chow Mei Kuan/Lee Meng Yean will lead the women’s doubles category together with Vivian Hoo/Yap Cheng Wen and Pearly Tan/M Thinaah.
