Manila: Malaysian men’s team was drawn with India and Kazakhstan in Group B for the 2020 Badminton Asia Team Championships redraw on Monday.
The redraw was done after China, Hong Kong’s men’s teams were banned from entering Philippines due to the coronavirus outbreak, while the India women’s team pulled out from the tournament also due to concern of the outbreak.
With the top two teams in each group automatically advancing to the quarter-finals, Group A’s Indonesia and Korea and Group D’s Japan and Thailand will just play for seeding because there were the only two teams in each of the group.
In women’s team event, Malaysian women’s team was placed in Group W with Japan, and since there were only two teams in Group W, they have qualified for the knockout stage automatically. In Group X, Korea and Kazakhstan, and Group Z, Chinese-Taipei and Singapore will also just play for seeding as well.
In the light of the coronavirus outbreak, Badminton Asia and the Philippine Badminton Association (PBA) have reassured that they would do everything they could to ensure the safety of all players competing at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum from February 11 to 16.
“We will make sure the safety of players and the Filipino audience during the event,” said PBA secretary-general Christopher Quimpo.
