WORLD No 1 Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong suffered a big blow to their badminton reputation when South Korean back-up pair Yoo Yeon Seong-Ko Sung Hyun toppled them in the Swiss Open men’s doubles final in Basel yesterday.
It was Kien Keat-Boon Heong’s second consecutive failure after losing to Danish veterans Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen, the eventual champions, in the first round of the All England a fortnight ago.
The results in the All England and Swiss Open do not augur well for Malaysia in the Thomas Cup Finals in May where Kien Keat-Boon Heong need to deliver in order to at least reach the semi-finals.
In the men’s singles, Chen Jin of China staved off a spirited challenge from compatriot Chen Long and secured a 12-21, 21-15, 21-17 win to earn his second Super Series crown after clinching it in 2008.
Wang Shixian of China won her second Super Series title of the year when she defeated compatriot Jiang Yanjiao 21-15, 21-19 . Shixian had bagged the Korea Open in January.
The women’s doubles title went to China as Qian Ting-Yu Yang defeated Miyuki Maeda-Satoko Suetsuna of Japan 21-16, 21-13.
In the mixed doubles, Olympic champions Lee Yong Dae-Lee Hyo Jung defeated Shin Baek Cheol-Yoo Hyun Young 21-14, 21-18 in an all-South Korean final.
