Men’s doubles pairing take title at All England Open Championship
Danish men’s badminton duo Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen on Sunday finally claimed the title that had eluded them for so long, the All England Open Championships, in an incredibly tense game that went down to the wire.
The pair were 11-16 down in the decider against Malaysian pairing Koo Keat and Tan Heong, but bounced back to prevail 15-21 21-18, 21-18.
The victory was particularly sweet following on the back of five final losses in a row to the Malaysian pairing, who they lost to in last year’s final despite having four match points.
"Last year we lost the final, which was a huge disappointment, so this is an unbelievable feeling. You can’t describe it," Boe told media after the game.
“We’re going back to Denmark tonight but we have two big bottles of champagne and I think we will drink them. We’re going to the Swiss Open next week – hopefully we will win that too and then we’ll have a huge party after that.”
Boe’s looping winner at 11-16 down in the final set was later named the ‘champagne moment of the week’ by organisers of the tournament.
