WHAT a match it was. On Sunday night Lee Chong Wei won a classic battle against his nemesis Chinese ace Lin Dan in straight sets.

In beating Lin Dan and two other world-class Chinese players enroute to his second All-England badminton crown, Chong Wei displayed nerves of steel and most importantly, patience, calm and strong determination even when not having his regular coach and mentor Misbun Sidek around.

Many doubted his ability to defend his crown, but the manner in which he disposed of all his opponents from Day One only goes to show Chong Wei had a burning desire to silence his critics.

He will now be the feared one in international tournaments. Lin Dan and other players will now find him a tough opponent.

Many of our budding and aspiring youngsters wanting to don national colours can do well to learn from his steely determination, positive attitude, strong self-belief and humility.

There’s only so much that BAM and/or the coaching committee can do. Players on their part should learn from their mistakes, make huge sacrifices, follow the training programme strictly, have confidence in themselves and dream “winning and success”.

Also, it was nice to see so many Malaysian supporters in the Arena continuously chanting “Malaysia Boleh” urging on and motivating Chong Wei.

He is indeed an excellent role model.
