THE Maybank Selangor Open was supposed to be a fun event for Lee Chong Wei but he is one step away from winning the mixed doubles title with Vivian Hoo.

Chong Wei-Vivian defeated national pair Ong Jian Guo-Lim Yin Loo 23-21, 21-14 in the last eight and defeated Zakry Latif-Nairul Suhada Latif 21-11, 21-19 in the semi-finals at Juara Stadium yesterday.

They will take on top seeds Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying, who overcame former national pair Razif Latif-Amelia Anscelly 21-16, 19-21, 21-14, in the final today.

The men's singles was filled with upsets as Chong Wei Feng was the only top four seed who survived.

The fact that top seed Liew Daren, second seed Arif Latif and fourth seed Chan Kwong Beng will be playing in the German Open, beginning Tuesday, could be the reason why the players decided to take it easy.

Back-up player Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin defeated Kwong Beng 11-21, 21-18, 21-19 while Wei Feng defeaed Nur Azryn Ayub 19-21, 21-14, 21-15 in the last four.

Iskandar edged Arif 21-12, 15-21, 24-22 in the last eight while Nur Azryn had toppled Daren 21-19, 21-13 at the same stage.
