SEPANG: Hundreds of Malaysians waving flags and banners to show their support welcomed home badminton hero Datuk Lee Chong Wei at the KL International Airport on Tuesday.

Over 400 fans had gathered at the airport as early as 4.30am to wait for his arrival to show their appreciation for putting up a good fight in Sunday's badminton final.Chong Wei being escorted out upon his arrival at KLIA

Among those at the airport were a delegation from the Youth and Sports Ministry, as well as students from Bukit Jalil Sports School who described Chong Wei as their "idol".

Chong Wei thanked everyone for their support "but I am disappointed not to bring home the gold."

He said he intended to compete for the next two years, and after that "see how long more I can play."

He expressed his intention to take part in the Commonwealth Games and the China Badminton League, adding that he would play in the 2016 Olympic Games if he is in good shape.

"I am not looking so far ahead just yet. I will be preparing for the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games first and see how my condition is. If no injuries, then I will try 2016,” he told his supporters.

On his upcoming marriage, Chong Wei laughed and said "that one later, let's talk badminton first-lah."

The shuttler emerged from the gates at around 8.30am, and was immediately met with cheers and renditions of "Inilah Barisan Kita".

Supporters waved the Jalur Gemilang and posters with words "NATIONAL HERO."
