THE BA of Malaysia (BAM) is in the final stages of hiring Korean doubles legend Park Joo Bong.
BAM will hold a meeting with National Sports Council (NSC) before an expected appointment of Joo Bong as the director of coaching.
BAM officials have held discussions with NSC director general Datuk Zolkples Embong who was supportive of the move.
Zolkples will meet with BAM president Datuk Seri Nadzmi Salleh soon, and this will be followed by an official offer to former Olympic champion Joo Bong.
The meeting between Nadzmi and Zolkples is expected to be about the salary of Joo Bong which will see BAM and NSC sharing the cost.
Joo Bong, currently Japan head coach, is also expected to have talks with his employer, Nippon Badminton Association next week.
BAM initially wanted a project manager for the 2016, 2020 and 2024 Olympic missions but since the association will be getting an experienced coach, the designation is likely to be changed to either coaching director or chief coach.
Zolkples also felt that it is better for BAM to have a hands-on coach than a project manager.
Joo Bong, who has been working in Japan for seven years, is expected to request that he starts working in Malaysia in January.
Joo Bong will be accompanying the Japanese squad to the Denmark Open (Oct 16-21) and French Open (Oct 23-28).
