GEORGE TOWN: The Sports Ministry will propose to the Cabinet to name one of the badminton courts at the National Badminton Academy in Bukit Kiara after the late Datuk Eddy Choong.
Its minister, Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said Eddy, after all, “had brought glory to the country during his heyday."
He was speaking to reporters after paying his last respects to Choong, who died on Monday, at his residence in Jalan Bell.
Ahmad Shabery said it was not the first time the ministry would name a sporting facility after a sport personality. "We have named one of the centre squash court after Datuk Nicol David.
"And now we are in the process of trying to have one of the courts named after Eddy," he said.
Ahmad Shabery said it would be good for the game if one of the courts could be named after the great shuttler.
He said the academy would not only cater for Malaysian players but would also become a badminton hub for the region.
Among those who paid their last respects to Choong today was state police chief Datuk Rahim Hanafi.
Choong’s funeral is Feb 1. He will be cremated at the Batu Gantong crematorium at 2pm.
