KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei will finally get some rest after all.

The two-time Olympic silver medallist, who was struggling to find his form in last month’s Denmark and French Opens, has decided to skip the China Open in order to recover from a recurring ankle injury.

The 31-year-old was scheduled to fly to Shanghai on Sunday. The China Open, a Super Series Premier event, begins on Tuesday.

Chong Wei, however, has not ruled out the possibility of competing in the Hong Kong Open from Nov 19-24 and the Super Series Finals in Kuala Lumpur from Dec 10-15.

“I’m skipping the China Open to let my foot recuperate,” said Chong Wei.

“But I may still compete in the Hong Kong Open. It depends on my recovery process. I’m going to start my physiotherapy tomorrow and then I will discuss with my coaches regarding my next move.

“Right now, I cannot say that I don’t want to play in the Super Series Finals because it’s held in Malaysia. If it’s in another country then maybe I would skip it. I know the fans will be waiting for me at the stadium and I will try my best not to disappoint them,” he added.

In Chong Wei’s absence, Malaysia’s challenge in the China Open will be shouldered by world No. 17 Chong Wei Feng and world No. 29 Liew Daren.

Both, however, are staring at an early exit after being drawn against tough opponents.

Wei Feng meets in the opening round an in-form Thai Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk, who defeated him in the second round of the Denmark Open.

As for Daren, he will face Dane Jan O Jorgensen, who won the French Open for his first Super Series title.

Malaysia have entered four pairs in the men's doubles – Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari, Gan Teik Chai-Ong Soon Hock, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong.
