PETALING JAYA: SEA Games-bound shuttler Iskandar Zulkarnian Zainuddin easily cleared the men’s singles first round at the Macau Open GP Gold tournament on Tuesday.
Iskandar took just 15 minutes to dispose of Trinidad and Tobago’s Nicholas Bonkowsky, winning 21-6, 21-7.
He will take on compatriot Ikmal Hussai Jaafar, who received a walkover following eighth seed Indian Anand Pawar’s pull-out, in the second round.

Zulfadli Zulkiffli, the 2011 world junior champion, also reached the second round after scoring an upset win over 13th seed Suppanyu Avihingsanon of Thailand.
Zulfadli won 21-14, 8-21, 21-11 and will face homester Wan Wai Chi next.
The biggest upset of the day was recorded by Son Wan-ho. The South Korean stunned top seed Kenichi Tago of Japan with an emphatic 21-11, 21-14 win.
In the men’s doubles qualifying rounds, Chooi Kah Ming-Teo Ee Yi, who made the Malaysian International Challenge final earlier this month, toiled for a place in the main draw.
They first defeated Thailand’s Watchara Buranakuea-Vasin Nilyoke 19-21, 21-13, 21-12. A few hours later, they overcame Hong Kong’s Ho Wai Lun-Law Cheuk Him 17-21, 21-9, 21-9.
Kah Ming-Ee Yi will take on China’s Chen Zhuofu-Kai Lu in the first round.
