KUALA LUMPUR: National Sports Institute (NSI) chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Dr Ramlan Abdul Aziz has recommended mixed doubles shuttler Goh Liu Ying to go for surgery.

Dr Ramlan, however, said he would leave it to Liu Ying to make the final decision.

Liu Ying, who is suffering from a nagging right knee injury, went to see Dr Ramlan yesterday to seek his advice on her condition.

“Liu Ying’s problem now is no longer about performances. It is a clinical issue that requires an immediate solution. I told her that the best option is to go for surgery. The longer she delays the decision, the worse it will become,” said Dr Ramlan.

Dr Ramlan said it was normal for an injured athlete to be worried about their future.

“Surgery is one part of it. The other is the rehabilitation programme. It takes a lot of discipline and commitment for an athlete to go through the recovery period. Liu Ying is young and I am positive that she will bounce back,” he added.

If the 24-year-old Liu Ying decides to go for the operation, she will be ruled out from the game for at least four to eight months and it could mark an end to her partnership with Chan Peng Soon.
Said Liu Ying: “Dr Ramlan wants the best for me and he has explained to me the whole procedure. I appreciate it. I just need a few more days to think about it before making a decision.”
