KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian men’s singles shuttlers ran out of luck in Lucknow and none made it to the semi-finals of the India Open Grand Prix.

On Friday, independent shuttler Zulfadli Zulkifli and Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) shuttler Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin crashed out to their Indian opponents in the quarter-finals. Zulfadli Zulkifli who beat top seed P. Kashyap a day ago and went down 19-21, 14-21 to H.S. Prannoy in Friday's quarter-final match at the India Open.

Zulfadli failed to reproduce the form that saw him beat top seed P. Kashyap a day ago and went down 19-21, 14-21 to H.S. Prannoy in 47 minutes.

It was then up to Iskandar to keep the flag flying but he too went down fighting 19-21, 21-18, 16-21 to Aditya Prakash in a gruelling 71-minute match.

Prannoy will take on compatriot K. Srikanth while Aditya has a challenging task against China’s Xue Song in Saturday’s semis.

While Malaysia’s singles department flopped, the doubles stepped up to the plate – with reigning SEA Games champions Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Hoo and Mohd Lutfi Zaim Abdul Khalid-Soong Fie Cho making it to the semi-finals of the women’s doubles and mixed doubles respectively.

Khe Wei-Vivian hardly broke sweat in their sensational 21-11, 21-6 win over Sanskriti Chhabra-Ekta Kalia of India to set up a clash against fourth seeds Yu Xiaohan-Huang Yaqiong of China on Saturday.

In the mixed doubles, Lutfi-Fie Cho made up for the shocking loss of compatriots and second seeds Tan Aik Quan-Lai Pei Jing by knocking out Si Wei Zheng-Yi Fan Jia of China 15-21, 21-12, 21-10.

In the semi-finals, Lufti-Fie Cho will seek to exact revenge on China’s Kaixiang Huang-Qingchen Chen, who had earlier beaten Aik Quan-Pei Jing 21-14, 21-15 in just 33 minutes.
