PETALING JAYA: Malaysia were comprehensively beaten 5-0 by favourites China in the Asian Junior Badminton Championships in Taiwan.

Playing in Group D, Malaysia sent in their second stringers and they all lost in straight games on Monday. Despite the defeat, Malaysia managed to clinch a place in the quarter-finals as runners-up of the group.

Today, Malaysia will take on hosts Taiwan. Taiwan caused a stir when they upset Thailand 4-1 to emerge as Group B champions.

Goh Yea Ching, who was rested against China, believes Malaysia have a fighting chance against Taiwan.

“The chances are there. What is important is for all of us to put forward a good performance and secure a place in the semi-finals,” said Yea Ching, who is Malaysia’s top junior girls’ doubles pair with Peck Yen Wei.

“Our strength lies in our boys’ and girls’ doubles. As for the other categories, we have a 50-50 chance of winning,” added Yea Ching.

If all goes according to plan, Malaysia are expected to field Yea Ching in the girls’ doubles and mixed doubles with Tan Jinn Hwa.

Malaysia are likely to field Cheam June Wei in the boys’ singles and they will be depending heavily on Ho Yen Mei to shine in the girls’ singles. In the boys’ doubles, hopes are high on Chen Jia Huo-Goh Sze Fei to secure a point.

If Malaysia get past Taiwan, they will play against the winners of the match-up between Indonesia and South Korea for a place in the final.

The other quarter-finals on Tuesday will be between Hong Kong and Japan while Thailand take on China.

For the record, Malaysia lost in the quarter-finals to Japan in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, last year.
