PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Goh Yea Ching was supposed to deliver two points – in the mixed doubles and girls’ doubles – against host Taiwan in the mixed team quarter-finals of the Asian Junior Championships.

But all she could do was win a point in the mixed doubles with Tan Jinn Hwa. It wasn’t enough to save Malaysia from losing 3-2 to Taiwan.

Malaysia began the day on a high, with Yea Ching-Jinn Hwa downing Lee Chia-hsin-Lee Chia-han 18-21, 21-19, 14-21.Peck Yen Wei (left) and her partner Goh Yea Ching in a file photo. Yea Ching-Yen Wei lost to Taiwan's Chang Ching-hui-Chang Hsin-tien 15-21, 15-21 in the girls' doubles.

Although Taiwan drew level when Lai Yu-hua beat Cheam June Wei 19-21, 22-20, 21-16 in the boys’ singles, Malaysia regained the lead through Goh Sze Fei-Chen Jia Huo, who fought brilliantly to beat Po Li-wei-Yang Ming-tse 21-17, 21-17 in the boys’ doubles.

Taiwan again fought back to level the score at 2-2, with Lee Chia-hsin putting up a gutsy performance to beat Ho Yen Mei 18-21, 22-20, 21-15 in the girls’ singles.

Everything then boiled down to the girls’ doubles. Unfortunately, Yea Ching and Peck Yen Wei went down 15-21, 15-21 to Chang Ching-hui-Chang Hsin-tien.

Yea Ching was downcast.

“I feel sad that I lost to Taiwan. I feel that I have disappointed my team-mates,” said Yea Ching after the game.

“However, our team spirits have improved and we are eager to train and prepare for the individual events. We won’t give up. Everyone has set his or her own targets and we won’t let the defeat by Taiwan affect our performance.”

Meanwhile, China and South Korea will clash in the final for the second consecutive year.

In Tuesday’s semi-finals, China beat Japan 3-0 while South Korea ousted hosts Taiwan by a similar score.
