Thomas Cup: Tommy Sugiarto shrugs off slow start to win in opener

New Delhi: After a three-month rest due to ankle injury, Tommy Sugiarto led Indonesia to a 5-0 win over Singapore. Derek Wong of Singapore was able to the only went the distance by forcing a rubber game before losing 11-21, 21-17, 15-21 in 54 minutes against Tommy Sugiarto.

It was not an easy first point for Tommy. ”I have not played in competitive tournament for a while due to my ankle injury. I didn't even join the team's centralize camp prior to Thomas Cup."

”I need to get use the pressure in top tournaments again, which had cost me the second set against Derek, but I think I am making good progress," said the current world number five, who last played in the All England early this year.

Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan beat Danny Bawa Chrisnanta and Chayut Triyachart 21-15, 21-16 in the first doubles, and second singles Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka sealed the tie by beating Huang Chao 21-17, 21-14.

In the remaining two matches, second doubles Ryan Agung Saputra and Angga Pratama beat Terry Hee and Wong 21-9, 21-15 in just 25 minutes, and third singles Simon Santoso wrapped up proceedings against Sean Lee 21-16, 22-20.

Indonesia is aiming for a 14th Thomas Cup title, will play Nigeria on Tuesday and will play their last game against Thailand on Wednesday.
