Sydney: Indian badminton stars Saina Nehwal and P.V. Sindhu advanced into the women’s singles second round at the $750,000 Australian Open Super Series.
Sindhu move past Japan’s Aya Ohori 21-16, 21-14 in 31 minutes. She will take on Thai player world number 13 Nichaon Jindapon on Thursday.
Meanwhile, sixth seeded Saina Nehwal had to fight hard to win her first round match that lasted a marathon hour and 15 minutes.
Nehwal lost the first set 22-24 to the tall and lanky Chinese player Sun Yu, but fought back to win 21-17, 21-10 in the next two sets to sail to the second round. With the win, Saina levelled her career meeting record with Sun to 1-1. She will take on compatriot P.C. Thulasi in the second round.
