Macau: Despite a persistent cough, former world junior champion Zulfadli Zulkiffli managed to scrap through with victory in the men’s singles second round of Macau Open beating Taiwan’s Wan Chia-hsin 21-11, 5-21, 21-12 in 42 minutes. However, the 2013 Asian Junior Champion – Soo Teck Zhi’s impressive run through the championship was halted by Taiwan’s Lin Yu-hsien after losing 21-18, 18-21, 11-21. Mohd Arif Abdul Latif of Malaysia was also sent packing by a fast and furious South Korean Heo Kwang-hee at the same day, losing 18-21, 17-21.

In women’s singles, defending champion P.V Sindhu of India took a little less than half an hour to dispose Chinese Taipei’s Han Hung Shih 21-19, 21-15. The second-seeded Indian had beaten Han in a trilling contest during the 2011 Vietnam Grand Prix Open. Sindhu will take on Indonesia’s Lindaweni Fanetri in the next round.

Malaysian women’s singles shuttler Yang Li Lian also advanced after she blasted past Thailand’s Chochuwong Pornpawee 21-17, 23-21 in 31 minutes.

Meanwhile, the reigning Commonwealth women’s doubles champion, third seeds Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei overpowered Taiwan’s Chiang Kai-hsin-Wu Fang-chien, winning 21-16, 21-16 to book a last 16 clash with Indonesia’s Della Destiara Haris-Gebby Ristiyani Imawan on Thursday.
