ENG Suk Cheng of SMK Berapit upset top seed and last year’s runner-up Chew Huey Han of SMJK(C) Heng Ee in the Penang Schools Sports Council Girls’ Under-15 semi-finals yesterday.
Seeded 3rd-4th, the 14-year-old took less than 30 minutes to win 21-9, 21-18 at the Badminton International Hall Bukit Dumbar, Penang.
Suk Cheng will meet doubles partner Angelina Low of SMJK(C) Jit Sin, who was taken to three games by Penang Chinese Girls High Schools Ang Fern Ying before winning 21-13, 19-21, 21-14, for the title.
In the doubles semi-finals, Suk Cheng and Angelina Low outplayed SMJK(C) Jit Sin’s Ang Jun Min and Loh Yu Han 21-9, 21-10 and will meet top seeds SMJK(C) Heng Ee’s Chew Wei Han and SMJK(C) Union’s Liu Jin Nee who thrashed SMJK(C) Union’s Tan Cheah Poh and Lee Hsu Lin 21-7, 21-5, in todays final. In the Boys’ Under-18 category, defending champion Loh Bok Seang is looking to defend his singles and doubles titles. He partnered Ritchie Lee to win the doubles title last year.
Bok Seang, 18, of Chung Ling Private beat SMJK(C) Chung Hwa Confucian’s Lim Chin Kee 21-7, 21-12 yesterday and next meets SMK Air Itam’s Ooi Kai Chen, who beat Ch’ng Darren of Bukit Mertajam High School, 21-14, 21-15.
In the doubles semi-finals Bok Sheang and Kai Chen outclassed SMJK(C) Scared Heart’s Lim Khai Xian and SMJK(C) Heng Ee’s Lim Khai Hong 21-11, 21-15. In the other semi-final, SMK George Town’s Mohd Zulhairi and Hazreen pulled off a 19-21, 21-15, 21-17 upset over Chng Darren and SMJK(C) Chung Hwa Confucians Tan Beng Ern.
