Dongguan: Even though Lee Chong Wei hasn’t played in a tournament since last year’s Asian Games, he was still the main star attraction on the first day of Sudirman Cup. Malaysian men’s doubles pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong produced their best in this competition when they played way above their ranking to beat world No. 1 Lee Yong-Dae/Yoo Yeon-Seong 20-22, 21-14, 27-25. Goh/Tan managed to hold their nerves and saved 5 match points in the decider to beat the world No.1 to clinch the first point for Malaysia.Chan Peng Soon (right) and Goh Liu Ying seal big Sudirman Cup win for Malaysia over Korea.

Lim Yin Fun then had no answer to Sung Ji Hyun of Korea and surrendered 9-21, 7-21 in 34 minutes.

After Lee Chong Wei put Malaysia ahead with 2-1, Vivian Hoo/Woon Khe Wei allowed Korean women’s doubles pair of Chang Ye Na/Jung Kyung Eun to level the tie at 2-2 when Vivian/Woon lost 20-22, 9-21 in 41 minutes.

The deciding match came down to Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying of Malaysia against
Kim Ha Na/Ko Sung Hyun of South Korea in the mixed doubles event. Chan/Goh sparked Malaysia’s hopes of a possible upset after they saved a match point when trailed by 19-20, to overcome the Korean pair 23-21 in the first set. Chan/Goh played a fantastic badminton in the second set, forced the Korean pair into a lot of errors and brushed aside Kim/Ko in straight sets in the deciding match 23-21, 21-13 in 44 minutes.

Chan/Goh’s victory helped Malaysia stunned the three-time champion Korea 3-2 in overall score.
