Kuala Lumpur: President of Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Tan Sri Tengku Mahaleel Tengku Ariff announced on Monday that BAM will send former world number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei and former world junior champion Zulfadli Zulkiffli to the 2015 World Championship held in Jakarta, this August.
Tengku Mahaleel said Lee Chong Wei proved that he was still the No. 1 player in the country after he triumphed over South Korea’s Lee Dong Keun 21-12, 21-10 in the first group tie on Day 1 of Sudirman Cup in Dongguan, China.
“Chong Wei’s performance last night at the Sudirman Cup was the main reason we’ve decided to send him to Jakarta. He has better chance of winning a medal in Jakarta,” said Tengku Mahaleel.
“Between Wei Feng and Zulfadli, Wei Feng had played twice in World Championships. Based on our principle and philosophy, we’ve decided to give the 21 year-old Zulfadli a chance to play in this year’s world meet,” added Tengku Mahaleel.
Tengku Mahaleel have assured Wei Feng that BAM would provide full support for him in his bid to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
“We’ve discussed this with Wei Feng, and he was very positive with the decision,” revealed Tengku Mahaleel.
When contacted by reporter on Monday, Zulfadli was very thankful for BAM’s decision.
“I hope Wei Feng will stay positive, and continue to do what is best for his badminton career,” said Zulfadli.
