KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's young doubles pair, Ong Soon Hock/Tan Bin Shen produced the biggest upset Thursday night when they beat the world's number one men's doubles pair, Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun of China in the second round of the Malaysia Open badminton championship, held at Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium, here.

Soon Hock, 22, and Bin Shen, 23, ranked number 32 in the world, edged the top seed and the 2005 All England champion, 25-23, 21-17 in 39 minutes and will battle against the American and Indonesian combination, Tony Gunawan (USA)/Candra Wijaya (INA) in the quarter-finals, which will start at 6 pm Friday.

In the previous encounters, the Malaysian duo lost all their battles against the Chinese pair, in the 2006 Hong Kong Open, 2006 Taiwan Open and 2005 Japan Open.

And what was more interesting was that the Malaysian duo had to play in three qualifying matches on Tuesday before beating the Japanese top pair Tadashi Ohtsuka/Keita Masuda in the first round Wednesday.

In 2005, the Malaysian pair also beat former world top pair and 2004 All England champion, Jens Eriksen/Martin Lundgaard Hansen of Denmark in a friendly match in Alor Star, Kedah.

Bin Shen said they had given their best performance tonight as, according to their coach, Rexy Mainaky, they had nothing to lose.

"We just concentrated on the match and did not focus on the fact that we're battling against the world number one," he told reporters, Thursday night.

Meanwhile, Soon Hock said he had to thank Rexy for giving the chance to stay in the national squad as he was nursing his right arm injury for the past eight months.

"We just played our best and tried to redeem our three previous defeats and we win this time," he said.

Rexy, meanwhile, said his charges played according to his plan by putting pressure on the Chinese pair.
