Jakarta: No. 15th seed Tommy Sugiarto has already looking towards to the 2016 Olympics after he was knocked out of the world championships on Wednesday.
As Indonesia’s only hope in the men’s singles, Sugiarto was unable to find a foothold in the men’s singles second round match when he suffered a heartbreaking three-set loss to unseeded Wei Nan of Hong Kong, going down 24-26, 21-8, 20-22 in 70 minutes.
“I am very disappointed to lose to Wei Nan. Since there must be winners and losers in a match, I’ll have to accept the defeat,” said Tommy Sugiarto.
Nevertheless, Sugiarto was quick to switch focus to the 2016 Olympics after being ousted at the worlds.
“I’m now ready to focus on my upcoming tournaments, especially the 2016 Olympics. 2016 Rio games is going to be a big goal for me, that’s where I want to play my best,” added Sugiarto.
It wasn`t all bad news for the hosts on Wednesday, with Indonesian women’s singles shuttler Lindaweni Fanetri upstaging 13th seed Minatsu Mitani from Japan 19-21, 21-14, 21-11 to progress to third.
Meanwhile, home favorites Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan had to fight tooth and nail to get away with a close call in the men’s doubles third round, beating Baptiste Careme/Ronan Labar of France 19-21, 21-17, 21-18 in 55 minutes.
