Jakarta: The crowd erupted in cheers inside the Istora Senayan Complex on Sunday, as Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan won the only world title for the host country by seizing the men’s doubles world title from Liu Xiaolong and Qiu Zihan of China.
The Indonesians were never troubled by their lower seeding opponents from China in the final, sweeping the title match 21-17, 21-14 in 37 minutes to win in front of a roaring crowd.
Ahsan dropped his racket and fell to his knees after the Indonesian pair scored the crucial match point.
To make their victory more special, Ahsan/Setiawan have dedicated their victory as part of Independence Day celebrations for Indonesia.
“Even though we won the world title a day before the Independence Day, I’m very proud to be able to contribute the world title as an Independence Day gift for Indonesia,” said Setiawan.
