East Java: Malaysian shuttler Daren Liew fought from a set down to overcome Indonesian Ivanudin Rifan Fauzin 21-23, 21-4, 21-10 on Wednesday to advance to the third round of 2015 Indonesia International Challenge.
Liew and Fauzin met for the first time in their career on Wednesday, and the Indonesia player who ranked world No. 190 was able to steal a set against Liew who ranked world No. 86. Fortunately, Daren Liew managed to play some superb badminton to fend off a fine effort from his young Indonesia opponent in 50 minutes. Liew will take on Thai player Pannawit Thongnuam who also encountered a tough fight in the men’s singles second round, where he was made to work to dispatch Kaushal Dharmamer of India 17-21, 21-10, 21-16 in 55 minutes.
No. 7 seed Soo Teck Zhi was also briefly troubled by Wibowo Kho Henrikho of Indonesia in the men’s singles second round, before Soo prevailed with 21-18, 17-21, 21-16 in 55 minutes. Soo will take on Lee Hong Je of Korea on Thursday.
Malaysia’s independent shuttler Tan Chun Seang also cruised through to the men’s singles third round after defeated Kantawat Leelavechabutr of Thailand 21-14, 21-16.
On the other hand, Malaysian shuttlers such as No. 15 seed Lim Chi Wing, and Tan Vi Hen all faltered in their men’s singles second round matches.
In women’s singles, No. 3 seed Tee Jing Yi, Lee Ying Ying, Sannatasah Saniru managed to breeze through to second round.
Febby Angguni of Indonesia scored big upset at the tournament on Wednesday when she stunned second seed Lyddia Cheah Yi Yu of Malaysia 21-13, 21-6 to advance to the women’s singles second round.
Meanwhile, Lyddia Cheah Yi Yu/Yang Li Lian, and Lim Payee/Lim Peiy Zhean became the only two Malaysian women’s doubles that made it to the last 16.
For all 10 Malaysian pairs that played in the tournament, only Lin Yeet Siang/Loh Wei Sheng, Jagdish Singh/Roni Tan Wee Long, Mohd Lutfi Zaim Abdul Khalid/Muhammad Hafizi Hashim, Ong Yew Sin /Yew Hong Kheng, and Low Juan Shen/Tai An Khang have successfully advanced to the second round.
