Malaysia has never won a title in the world badminton championships. Now might be the time for them to break the jinx.

In the 16th edition on home soil and as the 50th national anniversary is approaching, they have every reason to be optimistic.
Besides one men's singles silver medal in 2003 and three runner-ups in men's doubles in 1987, 1993 and 1997, Malaysia never took a step further.

As August 31 is the 50th national anniversary for Malaysia, Malaysian badminton team aims to win at least one gold medal.

Lee Chong Wei, second seed of men's singles, has tried to step out of the shadow after coach Li Mao left for South Korea.

In 2007, Lee has defeated several top players including Bao Chunlai of China in Indonesian Open final, Lin Dan of China in Sudirman Cup and Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia in China Masters quarter-final.

Though 25-year-old Lee has a stable form but Malaysian national men's singles coach Misbun Sidek is still cautious as Lee's would-be quarter-final opponent Peter Gade of Denmark has impressive winning records in Malaysia.

In 1998 and 2007, Gade won the Malaysian Open twice.

Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong might bring Malaysia another surprise. The men's doubles duo began to pair in Japanese Open in October, 2006 and won the titles of Asian Games, Malaysian Open, All England Open and Swiss Open.

Suffering ups and downs in form due to lack of systematic training, the pair quit the Thailand Open for better training. By lifting the Phillipines Open title, the pair restored their confidence.
