Kazan: World No. 4 men’s doubles player Carsten Mogensen was in stable condition after emergency surgery to treat the aortic aneurysm ruptures in his brain. He had no symptoms until he fainted in a hotel while playing at 2016 European Men’s & Women’s Team Championships in Kazan last Thursday.
According to his men’s doubles partner Mathias Boe, Carsten Mogensen fainted next to him, and was rushed to the emergency room immediately.
Russia’s Health Minister Veronica Skvortsova then took swift and decisive action to assign Russia’s best surgeons to handle the surgery.
“I visited Carsten this morning. He has been moved out from the intensive care department into a private room, and everything went according to plan. He will start rehabilitation soon, and we were able to get him to sit up for few seconds,” wrote Mathias Boe at their Facebook page.
Danish badminton legend Poul-Erik Høyer Larsen who is the current President of the Badminton World Federation also expressed shock and sympathy over Mogensen’s incident.
“I really hope that he fully recovers soon. It’s unfortunate that he is suffering from such as setback ahead of 2016 Rio Olympic Games,” said Poul-Erik Høyer Larsen.
In 2014, Mathias Boe himself had to undergo a surgery for umbilical hernia just few days before Thomas Cup finals that was held in New Delhi capital city of India.
Despite the absence of Mogensen, Denmark men’s team has emerged champions 2016 European Men’s & Women’s Team Championships by defeating France 3-1 last Sunday.
Denmark’s women were also crowned champions after a 3-1 victory against Bulgaria in the women’s team final.
