Copenhagen: While his men’s doubles partner Carsten Mogensen is still recovering from his brain surgery after suffering a life-threatening ruptured aortic aneurysms in his brain last week, the World No. 3 men’s doubles shuttler Mathias Boe has formed a temporary partnership with 2012 London Olympics men’s doubles champion Cai Yun of China.
Mathias Boe confirmed that he and Cai Yun will participate in the upcoming Malaysia and Singapore in his latest Facebook post:
“So while Carsten is recovering I will play a few tournaments with Cai Yun. I wanna stay fit so Lars Uhre and I talked about who I could play some tournament with, I knew Cai Yun retired from the national team, so thought of asking him. We still need approval from the Chinese association, but we have entered Malaysia and Singapore Open. Cai would be a dream partner for me, not only is he the greatest men´s doubles player of my generation, but also a really nive guy. I really hope the Chinese association will give permission.”
According to Chinese media, the Chinese Badminton Association has not yet approved Cai Yun’s request to retire from the Chinese national team and to team up with Mathias Boe.
“I have submitted my application to the Table Tennis and Badminton Administrative Centre of the State General Administration of China, and I am not sure if they will approve it. If they don’t, I am not able to participate in any tournaments with Mathias Boe,” said Cai Yun.
Cai Yun and Mathias Boe have known each other for many years as they are friends and great rivals on the badminton court. Both developed some really close friendship when they were playing in the India’s 2016 Premier Badminton League (PBL) early this year. Although Cai Yun was playing for Awadhe Warriors, while Mathias Boe was playing for Mumbai Rockets in the PBL, they remained in fairly close contact even after PBL ended its 2016 season on Jan 17, 2016.
Even if they are eventually allowed to play together as a pair, whether they could forge an impressive partnership and could replicate their past success is still remain to be seen.
One of their main problems would be a lot of overlapping between their skill sets, because Cai Yun has been known as a very skillful player being able to read the game very well at the front of the court, while Mathias Boe is also quite strong in front court.
