Basel: Malaysia’s Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong marched into the quarter-finals of the 2016 Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold Badminton Tournament on Thursday after they smashed down Puavaranukroh Dechapol/Kedren Kittinupong of Thailand in straight sets of 21-10, 21-16 in 28 minutes to secure a quarter-final match up against Marcus Ellis/Chris Langridge of England on Friday at St Jakobshalle Arena in Basel, Switzerland.Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong were defeated by Mathias Christiansen/David Daugaard in the second round of 2016 Swiss Open. However, the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games men’s doubles gold medal pair, Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong suffered a major blow as they were knocked out of the tournament after going down 17-21, 14-21 at the hands of unseeded Mathias Christiansen/David Daugaard of Denmark.

In women’s doubles, Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair Vivian Hoo Kah Mun/Woon Khe Wei were stretched to limit before they stormed back from a set down to dismiss English pair, Heather Olver/Lauren Smith 21-14, 19-21, 21-16 in their second round match that lasted 59 minute.

Vivian Hoo/Woon who are still trying to win their first title of the season will face-off against the No. 8 seeds, Jongkolphan Kititharakul/Rawinda Prajongjai in the quarterfinals on Friday after the Thailand pair edged the scratch pair of Kristina Gavnholt/Sabrina Mattle (Czech Republic/Switzerland) 21-14, 21-11 in another second round match.

In women’s singles, second seed Ratchanok Intanon made a surprise exit after the Thai player was beaten by China’s He Bing Jiao 21-14, 18-21, 13-21 in a 61 minutes battle.

Xue Song of China who reached the semi-finals of last week’s All England Open Badminton Championship, will play Henri Hurskainen of Sweden and is very like to make a back-to-back semi-finals appearance in Basel on Saturday.
