Balikpapan: 16-year-old women’s singles shuttler Goh Jin Wei of Malaysia advanced to the quarter-finals of the Indonesia Grand Prix after beating local shuttler Desandha Vegarani Putri 21-17, 21-10 in 37 minutes on Thursday. Despite strong showing from Goh Jin Wei in the women’s singles, Malaysia suffered a total disaster in the men’s singles event at the tournament.

There were four other Malaysians who made the exit from the competition on Thursday, as former Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) players Chong Wei Feng, Daren Liew have bowed out from the tournament. No. 13 seed Goh Soon Huat also lost to Wei Nan of Hong Kong in the third round, while Soong Joo Ven had failed to clear the second round.

In the 67-minute battle held at the Gedung Dome Stadium, Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing  held off a late surge from Afiat Yuris Wirawan-Nadya Melati of Indonesia, beating the Indonesians 18-21, 22-20, 21-16. Tan/Lai will play Indonesia’s Lukhi Apri Nugroho-Ririn Amelia in the next stage.
