Moscow: Malaysia lost to Korea 1-3 in their final 8 badminton tie of the 14th World University Badminton Championships at the Palace of Sports in Borisoglebskiy, Russia on Tuesday.
Shevon Lai Jemie/Muhammad Amzzar Zainuddin got Malaysia off to a shaky start in the tie by narrowly losing the first set 21-23 to Choi Sol Gyu/Ko Hye Ryeon of Korea in the first set of the mixed doubles event. The Malaysian then retired from the match after trailing 3-4 in the second set.
Then, former World Junior champion Zulfadli Zulkiffli bowed out to Seo Seung Jae in the men’s singles match, losing in two straight games 18-21, 14-21, allowing Malaysia to fall behind with a 0-2 deficit.
Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub/Jagdish Singh Dhanoa kept the Malaysians in the tournament by beating Korean pair Choi Sol Gyu/Jung Jae Wook 21-8, 19-21, 15-21 in men’s doubles.
However, Yap Rui Chen could not level the tie when she lost to Choi Yoo Ri 14-21, 16-21 in the women’s singles.
Korea will play China for a place in the final on Wednesday.
