Paris: Former Malaysian second men’s singles player Chong Wei Feng defeated two of his opponents in the qualifying rounds at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin in Paris to advance to the main draw of French Open Superseries on Tuesday.
Chong got off to a good start to dispatch Denmark shuttler Emil Holst 21-16, 21-19 in the first match on Tuesday. He then battled past World No. 77 Scott Evans of Ireland in the second qualifying match to move into the main draw.
However, a tough draw awaits Chong Wei Feng in the first round of main draw with a collision against eighth seed, Angus Ng Ka Long of Hong Kong.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s World No. 16 mixed doubles pair of Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing raced through their opener against Ben Lane/Jessica Pugh of England by beating the England pair 21-9, 21-16 in just 30 minutes.
Tan/Lai are set to take on No. 2 seeds Praveen Jordan/Debby Susanto of Indonesia next. Jordan/Susanto had to work extra hard on Tuesday to move past brother and sister pair from Ireland – Sam Magee/Chloe Magee in the mixed doubles first round.
